Computer System

What is Computer?

The word “computer” comes from the Latin word” computer”(compute in English) which means to calculate.

The computer can be defined as an electronic device that can accept data and instructions as input by using input devices, store and process them arithmetically and logically then deliver the processed result as output to the user by using output devices.

The basic parts without which a computer cannot work are as follows:

Processor: It executes instructions from software and hardware.

Memory: It is the primary memory for data transfer between the CPU and storage.

Motherboard: It is the part that connects all other parts or components of a computer.

Storage Device: It permanently stores the data, e.g., hard drive.

Input Device: It allows you to communicate with the computer or to input data, e.g., a keyboard. Output Device: It enables you to see the output, e.g., monitor.

Characteristics of computer

Speed

A computer works with much higher speed and accuracy compared to humans while performing mathematical calculations. Computers can process millions (1,000,000) of instructions per second. The time taken by computers for their operations is microseconds and nanoseconds.

Accuracy

Computers perform calculations with 100% accuracy. The degree of accuracy of computer is very high and every calculation is performed with the same accuracy. Errors may occur due to data inconsistency or inaccuracy.

Diligence

A computer can perform millions of tasks or calculations with the same consistency and accuracy. It doesn’t feel any fatigue or lack of concentration. Its memory also makes it superior to that of human beings.

Versatility

Versatility refers to the capability of a computer to perform different kinds of works with same accuracy and efficiency. You may use your computer to prepare payroll slips, office work, mathematical calculation, word processingetc.

 Reliability

A computer is reliable as it gives consistent result for similar set of data i.e., if we give same set of input any number of times, we will get the same result.

Automatic

Computer performs all the tasks automatically i.e. it performs tasks without manual intervention. User is required to give the data and utilize the result but the processing is automatic.

 Memory

A computer has built-in memory called primary memory where it stores data. Secondary storage are removable devices such as CDs, pen drives, etc., which are also used to store data.

 Processing

Computer can process large volume of data in great speed.

There are different types of operation during processing such as

  • input/output operation,
  • logic/comparison operation,
  • text manipulation operation

Capabilities and limitations of computer

Capabilities

  • The computer is capable of producing 100% accurate outputs,  calculations at extremely high speed using correct data and instructions.
  • It is capable of permanently storing huge amounts of data and retrieving it whenever required.
  • It can perform repetitive tasks with the same speed and memory.
  • It is capable of performing different types of tasks in different areas.

Limitations

  • The computer is a non-intelligent machine. It cannot think and give the right decisions.
  • It cannot operate without a battery or electricity.
